During Lent and Holy Week, we remember that God gave the world Jesus, and Jesus gave us his life. While many people may think of Lent as a somber time to "give up" things, we might better see it as a time to give our hearts, our lives, and our gifts in response to God's own gracious generosity in our lives. This year during Lent, we start out New Orleans style, continue our collaborative services with United Church of Jaffrey and host a weekly devotional book study.

Remembering the triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, we will be processing from the Parish House to the Sanctuary at the start of the 10:30 worship service. This transition marks the beginning of Holy Week.

This year, the United Church of Jaffrey is hosting the Maundy Thursday service at 54 Main Street in Jaffrey. The service, which is shared between First Church in Jaffrey and the United Church of Jaffrey will start at 6:30 pm. The Tenebrae service consists of psalms, readings, and gradual extinguishing of candles as a way of remembering the last hours of the life of Jesus.

First Church celebrates Easter with special music. A string quartet using Baroque instruments and led by cellist Andrew Koutroubas will play selections from Vivaldi’s Gloria with harpsichord and choir at our Easter services. Musical preludes will start at 10:15 on Sunday, April 21.  Music Minister Gene Faxon will conduct and play his harpsichord, and members of the Monadnock Chorus will sing with the First Church choir. The Laudamus Te soprano duet will be sung by Betsy Feiker and Debby Kaiser, and the Domine Deus, Agnus Dei alto solo will be sung by Janet Grant.
The sermon, on “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” will be given by the Rev. Robin Lunn, the minister of First Church.
